What to Know About Hypoglycemia in Chihuahuas
Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. It occurs when glucose suddenly drops below normal levels, and it is a big concern with Chihuahuas, especially puppies and teeny tiny Chis. Some of the most common signs of hypoglycemia in Chihuahuas is wobbliness, lack of coordination, trembling, not responding, and acting dazed.
If you see your Chihuahua with any of these signs, immediately give a few drops of pancake syrup, honey, or sugar water. It shouldn't take long for the dog to get back to normal glucose levels, usually around 5 minutes after syrup is administered.
The number one cause of hypoglycemia is going too long without food, especially as puppies. Other causes are not eating soon after waking up in the mornings, or not eating after a long play time.
To keep your puppy from getting hypoglycemic, we recommend keeping dry food out 24/7(even if it is just a few pieces), feeding wet food as soon as the puppy wakes up in the mornings, and right after long playtime sessions. If you have an exceptionally small puppy, you can also put a pinch of sugar in the puppy's water bowl just as extra assurance to not get low blood sugar.
