What is a Teacup Chihuahua?
Teacup Chihuahuas do not exist. Plain and simple.
We hear the term teacup, toy, micro, miniature all the time when people describe the Chihuahuas they own or are selling. These terms were started by breeders that bred for profit and used the marketing ploys to get customers. The AKC Chihuahua standard is 2-6 pounds. Like all breeds, there are some that end up at the bottom of that range and some that end up at the top. Some will even exceed the standard and get to 7 or 8 pounds, but they are still regular Chihuahuas just like the ones that are 2lbs.
When looking for a puppy, please don't be fooled by these terms, they are either ploys from people trying to sell their pups for more money, or the person using the term just doesn't know that "teacup" doesn't exist. Ask for photos and weights of parents and see what the puppy is charting to weigh as an adult.
If you are looking for a Chihuahua that is will be under 2 pounds as an adult, you're probably not going to find it; if you do, it will most likely have lots of health problems. If you are set on finding a Chihuahua that will be 2-3 pounds, do your research into health problems to lookout/prepare for(liver shunts, heart murmurs, hydrocephalus, constant hypoglycemia).
There are only two types of Chihuahuas: smooth coat and long coat. That's it.
Some people say that "apple head" and "deer head" are also types of Chihuahuas, but they are not. These terms just describe the dog's head shape and muzzle length. Apple head is breed standard; a short muzzled, round head. Deer head is not to standard and describes a dog with a longer muzzle and a flatter, less pronounced forehead. No matter the size of the dog or the shape of their head, they are all Chihuahuas.
