Crate Training: Why is it Important?
Crate training is very important for all dogs no matter the breed. First of all, it gives the dog their own personal space. They might want to take a break from playing with other dogs or children and just chill out; a crate gives them somewhere to do that where they won't be bothered.
Crate training is also important to keep your puppy from developing separation anxiety. We all know or have heard of someone that has a dog that follows right on their heals wherever they go, whines when they cannot see their owner, and destroys things in the house when left alone. Teaching a puppy to be crated helps them learn that it is ok to have time alone from its owner; and they also can't destroy things in the house or get themselves hurt.
Potty training becomes much easier as well when your dog is crate training. A dog doesn't like to go to the bathroom where it sleeps. They will probably have a few accidents at first, but they eventually develop the skills to hold it until they are let out and put outside. This helps put the dog on a potty schedule as well as learning that they cannot go to the bathroom wherever they want in the house.
If your dog has to go to the vet and stay awhile, they will be put into a kennel. If your dog is crate trained then it will chill out and know that it is quiet time. When I interned at a vet's office, I personally saw dogs that stayed at the vet's that are quite obviously not crate trained. The dogs would scream, whine, and bite at the bars on the doors the entire time of their stay. They also soiled their kennels multiple times; not fun to clean up!
Crate training is very important to keeping dogs happy and safe. Our dogs here at White Crest Chihuahuas are usually crated when we leave the house and during the night. Puppies that we are keeping are crated various times throughout the day even times when we are home so they learn that crate time is not bad and so they don't develop separation anxiety.
